Fifa happy with 2010 progress
Oct 17, 2007 at 12:00 AM

Soweto - A senior Fifa official gave his seal of approval on Tuesday to South Africa's preparations for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, playing down concerns about stadium construction after a recent strike.

"I am satisfied with the general preparations," Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke said.

"We have an attentive ear on the stadia. There are places where we pay more attention on stadia. We have a technical team and a sense of system that allows us to be assured that things will go on as wished," he added.

Valcke's comments come after a recent stoppage by construction workers building the new Green Point stadium in Cape Town, who downed tools for nearly a week in a dispute over travel allowances.

The chairperson of Fifa's local organising committee, Irvin Khoza, told reporters he was also satisfied that all building work was on schedule to be completed by a Fifa-set 2009 deadline.

"Generally, good progress is being made and the organising committee is confident the 2010 Fifa World Cup construction deadlines will be met," said Khoza.

Khoza meanwhile said around 3 000 people, including Fifa officials and journalists were expected to attend the draw for the World Cup qualifying rounds in Durban on November 25.

Ten venues will host the 2010 tournament which will be the first time that the world's most popular sporting event has been staged on African soil.

Stadium construction on track
Oct 31, 2007 at 12:00 AM

Johannesburg - The FNB Stadium which is under construction, will host the first and final game of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, is ahead of schedule according to senior site manager Corne Esterhuizen of Grinaker LTA.

"The north, south and east stands are six months ahead of schedule and will most definitely be completed before the deadline," said Esterhuizen.

The stadium is scheduled to host the 2009 Confederations Cup tournament in which Brazil, World Champs Italy and 2010 hosts South Africa will compete in.

"Construction is going smoothly, we've had no problems with the workforce, the delivery of goods or any other delays.

"We have a very good managerial team and we're coping well with the work. I am confident the stadium will be complete by March or April 2009," he said.

The first Fifa World Cup game is scheduled to kick off on June 11, 2010.

'Come exploit 2010 opportunities'
Oct 27, 2007 at 12:00 AM

Johannesburg - European women are welcome to come and exploit 2010 business opportunities, Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica told the European Black Women in Business Federation in London on Saturday.

"I would like to invite you to the wonderful opportunity as South Africa will be hosting the Fifa Soccer World Cup in 2010," said Sonjica.

"This event has created a lot of business activity within the country and we encourage women to participate in all opportunities as they arise," she said.

Sonjica said a need for partnering in programmes would accelerate entrance into the business arena.

She said: "Partnership with European women could bear fruits and SA women could learn from their expertise of hosting the kinds of events as the world cup".
